Thankful for 1st Grade Fun

We went into Thanksgiving break with another busy week. I am sure the kids were looking forward to week break. They have been working so hard. The biggest thing about our week was our STEAM project! First grade used “Fairy Tales in Motion” for our focus during our STEAM project. Our class read Rapunzel and then had to design and build a parachute that would allow Rapunzel to escape the tower safely. It was definitely harder than we thought. We had to really focus on ways to make the parachute land softer. Rapunzel took some tumbles out of the parachutes at first. Mrs. Owen, our school IT, helped us make Rapunzel by using the 3D printer.

We also go to know more about our friend Ava last week while she was the Superstar. Pinky the Pineapple will be taking a break over the holiday and will go home with a new friend next Friday.

We also had our guest reader come on Friday. Logan’s brother, Asher, came and read to us as well as Logan’s mom! Of course we love when parents come and read to us but they also love hearing from older siblings too. It was a treat for me too. I taught Asher in Kindergarten! He was in my first class at CCE!

Happy Veteran’s Day

It was another busy and eventful week! We started off the week with Google Expeditions. This let us explore space, sea animals, and much more virtually.

We were busy learning this week. We explored addition and subtraction and kept using informational text books to learn about Thanksgiving. I hope you all are enjoying the items  your kids are sharing with you in Seesaw.

Today, we celebrated Veteran’s Day with our annual assembly put on by Mrs. Martin. The 5th graders sang and we had the Westwood Color Guard present the flags. We also got to hear from 3 Veterans who are also parents at our school. To end the assembly two former Canyon Creek students (one was Charlie’s sister, Sophia) played Taps as the entire school exited back to class in silence. It is such a powerful thing to see everyone from Kindergarten to 5th grade show respect for our Veterans.

We got to learn a lot about our friend Antonio this week while he was the Star Student. It was fun to get to know him better. Next week, we will learn more about Ava!

Akshara’s mom was our guest reader today. She even brought along Akshara’s grandfather as a surprise. She read The Real Tooth Fairy, Dog Breath, and Harry and the Lady Next Door.

Have a great weekend! Only one week until Thanksgiving!

First Grade in November

What a week it has been! Hopefully things will slow down after these last 2 crazy weeks. Between Red Ribbon Week, the 20th Celebration, and Halloween, everyone is worn out! I hope you have a restful weekend. This week, we wrapped up our expository unit with the focus on spiders. We wrote facts and then made a spider craft which  you will need to pop in and see in the hallway. We also wrote a journal entry as a class after reading Diary of a Spider. That is hanging out in the hallway as well. Be sure to check out Seesaw for some spider ChatterKid videos and some great 50’s day pictures in the pink car.

This week, we also explored magnets. Kids always love exploring magnets. They love to see what all magnets will stick to. We used animals with paper clips underneath them to move them from one end of the trail to the other.

This week we learned more about our friend Alex F. Next week we will learn more about Antonio.

Charlie’s dad came to read to us as our guest reader today. He read Texas A to Z and Otis and the Scarecrow. After reading Texas A to Z, the ABC song broke out!

Have a great weekend!
